Tire Slashings Reported In Holmesburg

Posted: Updated:
Residents in the city’s Holmesburg section say they woke up to their tires slashed, and now they're fuming.

Police say at least seven vehicles were targeted on or just off the 4200 block of Frost Street in Holmesburg overnight.

In every case, a single curb side tire was punctured by a small blade device of some kind right in the side wall.

“I don't have that kind of money. Just to be throwing out, you know,” said resident Ray Garner.

Most of the vandalism was obvious, a single stab mark about three quarters of an inch across and a clearly flat tire.

Some residents called AAA to change out the flat for a spare. However, others did not realize the damage until they were already on the road.

John Fearnley drove his 1st grade son to school on a tire he later realized had been punctured.

Northeast Detectives were on the block throughout the day, dusting targeted vehicles for fingerprints and checking home security cameras for video of the vandal in action.

By mid-afternoon, a possible break, Tracie Bobb says police recovered footage from her system showing what they believe is the vandal, walking up the block around 4:00 a.m. and targeting a Dodge.

“It shows tall white slender male, average, between 19-23 years of age at the one vehicle, reaching down quickly, puncturing the tire then standing back up and walking up to the end of the block,” said Bobb. “He disappears behind the van, but you can see where he's leaning forward he's going to do.”

"I guess they think they're not going to get caught," said Philadelphia Police Lieutenant Dennis Rosenbaum. "As we see everyday, these videos are becoming an integral part of our investigations, and we dedicate the time and the people to learn the systems and how to get it out and get the video how and it helps us solve these crimes."
