Willis Ledge Closed After Cracking Under Tourists’ Feet

Posted: Updated:
Chicago, IL-A California family experienced a frightening situation after a glass floor at Willis Tower began cracking while they were standing on top of it.

The family was visiting the famous Chicago landmark on Wednesday night when the incident happened.

The glass ledge juts from the building's 103rd floor, and allows visitors to feel like they're standing suspended in air.

After snapping a family photo on the ledge, it began to crack.

Willis Tower officials say the family was never in danger. They also say a protective coating covering the glass surface cracked and not the glass itself.

Officials claim the cracks do not affect the structural integrity of the ledge.

According to officials, all four ledges are temporarily closed for "routine inspection."

The Willis Towner opened in 2009.
