Demolition Crew Discovers Hidden Underground Room In Middletown

MIDDLETOWN TWP., Pa. -

A demolition crew was really close to finishing their job for the day when they uncovered a secret underground room.

James Thornton was one of the men working on the demolition crew that found the mysterious tunnel.

"After we dug that out we were just standing around talking, and the whole side fell down. That’s when we noticed the hole” said Thornton

Inside of the hole was a large room with vaulted ceilings. Local historians found empty bottles.

Robin Pellegrini of Middletown Historical Society said, “on the deed, it doesn't say, D for dwelling, it says SAL which he is thinking means saloon possibly so there could've been a speakeasy in there.”

The local historians consulted with The Pennsylvania Historic Museum Commission. Experts believe that the evidence supports one theory that it could have been used as a speakeasy in the 1920's.

The room had been walled off for many years. The new discovery is drawing visitors with questions about why this room was hidden.

Some theorist believe the room used as part of the Underground Railroad or a hiding place for liquor during prohibition.

The newly discovered room is not hidden anymore, but its secrets are still let in the dark.
