Posted: Updated:

A police officer who was shot in Chester, Delaware County, early Monday has been treated and released from the hospital while the suspect shot by police has died of his injuries, authorities say.

The shooting happened in a backyard on the 1200 block of Culhane after officers were called to the area around 3:30 a.m. for a domestic dispute, Chester Deputy Police Commissioner Otis Blair said.

When officers arrived on location, there was no response at the residence. Blair said the officers were "about to clear, and at some point a male came out armed, made contact with the police officers, there was an exchange of gunfire. As a result of that gunfire, one officer was struck. The male with the gun was also struck multiple times."

The officer, who police said was struck in the abdomen, and the wounded suspect were transported to Crozier Chester Medical Center.

Chester's police commissioner was said to be visiting the officer at the hospital.

Word of the suspect's death and the officer's release from the hospital came during a 9 a.m. news conference.

SkyFOX over the scene showed investigators remained in the backyard after daybreak examining many evidence markers on the ground.
