Robotic mannequins used for training at NJ hospital

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Noelle is a robotic mannequin that blinks, breathes, and gives birth. You can find her at Valley Hospital Center for Childbirth in Ridgewood, N.J., where she is used to train labor and delivery teams on how to react in high-risk situations that don't happen every day.

Beth McGovern, a clinical practice specialist, says the training has improved teamwork and communication.

The person administrating the simulation can create different obstacles and challenges on the fly based on each step the team takes during the emergency. Beth says a lot of gaming technology is now translated into simulation technology.

And the simulation doesn't stop with Noelle. Baby Hal is utilized and Pediatric Hal, representing a 5-year-old, as well, for training for operations, pediatric emergencies, neonatal resuscitation, and endoscopy procedures.

While some are initially rattled by the doll like robots, staff members at the hospital say the practice courses are invaluable.
