Leaning Columns Keep I-495 Bridge Closed In Del.

Posted: Updated:
WILMINGTON, Del. - Interstate 495 over the Christina River in Wilmington remains closed Tuesday morning as engineers wait to learn more about problems with the bridge.

An engineer reported noticing something wrong with the bridge.

Inspectors determined that four of the 37 columns that hold up the bridge are out of alignment, and the tilt has the concrete barrier on one side a foot higher than the barrier on the other side.

Delaware's Department of Transportation ordered an emergency shutdown of the bridge in both directions Monday evening.

CHECK: Latest Traffic Conditions

The columns sit on concrete poured 125 feet underground, so engineers need to determine how the shift has occurred.

Crews put up tilt sensors, which they say will let them know sometime Tuesday afternoon the severity of the problem.

In the meantime, the six-lane stretch used by 90,000 cars a day is closed indefinitely.

"If it is continuing to move, then it's a much different problem set," DelDOT Secretary of Transportation Shailin Bhatt said Monday. "If the bridge has stopped, then that will give us a better indication there was a problem and now it's resolved and we're just dealing with a structural issue."

The bridge was last inspected in October 2012 and was scheduled for inspection again this Fall.

Engineers hope to have an update on the problem and possible repairs sometime Tuesday afternoon.Car traffic is being shifted onto Interstate 95. As for a detour for truck traffic to the Port of Wilmington, northbound truck traffic can access the port from I-495 exit 2 to Terminal Avenue, while southbound truck traffic can use I-95 southbound to I-295 northbound to Route 9 to Terminal Avenue.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley is live Tuesday morning in Wilmington morning to tell us more about the problems DelDOT is facing.
