Millville Volunteer Firefighters Honored For 50 Years Of Service

Posted: Updated:

Volunteering in any way for any amount of time is a big deal.

But how about volunteering to risk your life for others for 5 decades straight?

Some volunteer firefighters in South Jersey have done just that. And now they're getting the recognition they deserve.

"It's a long time fighting fire and you're helping your community," said Bill Nichols.

He's one of three men who have 50 years volunteering with the Millville Fire Department.

"Once you get started you don't want to quit," said Nichols.

On Wednesday night, the department, mayor and the town presented Bill Nichols, Arthur Upham and Bruce Morris with a commemorative watch and certificate in front of their uniformed comrades. The men recalled the long road from 1964 until now, including some of the biggest fires fought.

Pictures line the wall as a reminder of what these volunteers do alongside career firefighters, and those who didn't make it.

"It doesn't get any easier with some of the comrades you bury that you've known a long time. We've lost some who have only been here a short time. Firefighting is a health hazard occupation," said Morris.

And then there's the sacrifices they make, not for money, but for service to their community.

"I've left my wife standing in the hallway going to a dance when the fire bell went off and ran to the fire. You kind of get your heart set in it and your kids and everybody know this is it. This is what you do. You're a volunteer and it's your contribution to this city," said Nichols.
