Delware Beaches Reopened After Shark Bite

Posted: Updated:

Beaches at Cape Henlopen State Park on the Delaware coast were reopened for swimming just after 1 p.m. Friday.

The beaches were shut down after a teenager was attacked by a shark at the Sussex County beach.

Ground and aerial observation of the Atlantic Ocean found no sharks in the water in the area encompassing the park's beaches.

Officials have decided to reopen the beaches after considering the biologists' consensus that the bite that occurred yesterday should be treated as an isolated incident.

The 16-year-old was standing in about five feet of water Monday afternoon when he says something grabbed his left arm. The teen then says he saw a shark swim away.

The bite is believed to have been caused by a juvenile sand bar shark.
