Police Officer Stabbed In Bensalem, Cruiser Stolen

Posted: Updated:
BENSALEM, Pa. -

"Bensalem is nothing but liars," were the words of anger from 23-year-old Matthew Miller, calling investigators liars as Bensalem cops loaded him into a van hauling him away to prison, after being charged with the attempted murder of a police officer.

Miller is accused of stabbing Officer Michael Jachimski after he was stopped Tuesday afternoon.

"He just didn't cooperate with us from the time the officer encountered him obviously by his actions and that continued on with…refusing cooperation with us," said Police Sgt. William McVey.

Cops were looking for Miller, after he escaped a prison work release program.

"The sound of ratchets on (a) handcuff going on you, he may have had that moment of pause that he wanted to take off," explains Public Safety Director Fred Harran.

The stabbing happened at Bristol Pike and Woodhaven Road.

Investigators say miller first complied with the officer arresting him, but then snapped.

"Freedom's a precious thing we have and he probably figured his freedom was over at that point and would fight it out with the officer. He then started to physically push the officer," said Harran.

Jachimski was then knifed in the stomach, but his bullet proof vest prevented any injury to his body.

"I think he's extremely lucky. The vest played a pivotal part in that. We're thankful that he was able to go home tonight to his family," added Sgt. McVey

Sources say Miller then ran off in the officer's police cruiser, leading the Bensalem, Pennsylvania State and Philadelphia Police departments into Northeast Philadelphia.

The vehicle was dumped at Knights and Fairdale where it was recovered by investigator, but police say they were still on the hunt for Miller, who took off on foot.

"As he was on foot pursuit after he left the police car abandoned he started shredding his clothes, we deployed K-9 to search the area in Philadelphia. The knife was recovered," said
