House Majority Leader Eric Cantor Upset In Primary Stunner

Posted: Updated:

In this election year there are races that are being closely watched, and then there are some where the outcome has been taken for granted.

This was among the latter, a huge upset in a race that wasn't even supposed to be close, FOX's Doug Luzader reported Wednesday morning from Washington.

"Look, obviously, we came up short," House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said Tuesday night after losing his primary race in Virginia.

If Cantor hadn't even considered what he would possibly say in a concession speech, few could blame him. Not many who follow politics even thought his race was competitive.

"It's disappointing, sure," Cantor said. "But I believe in this country, I believe there's opportunity around the next corner for all of us."

Cantor was defeated by a fellow Republican, David Brat, an economics professor who with very little money became a giant killer overnight.

And he did so decisively. This race wasn't even close.

In a heavily Republican district, Brat is now favored to win the seat come November.

"This is happiest moment obviously of my life," Brat said Tuesday night, "and I owe it to all of you in this room, No. 1, so give yourself a hand."

Cantor was second in line to House Speaker John Boehner, and many thought he was a likely candidate to become speaker himself one day.

But he also faced withering criticism from the right, from Tea Party-backed groups who saw his stance on immigration reform as being far too lenient.

Democrats hoping to win control of the house in November wasted no time, almost immediately sending out a fundraising email based on Cantor's loss.

And Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who hopes to regain the speaker's chair should her party retake the House, said, "As far as the midterm elections are concerned, it's a whole new ball game."
