Dog Survives 14-Story Fall Down Apartment Vent Shaft

Posted: Updated:
Oakland Park, FL.-A very lucky dog is recovering after falling 14-stories down a vent shaft at a Florida apartment complex on Friday.

Elaine Carlis says she took Susie, a 4-year-old Maltipoo, to a friend’s apartment complex for a visit. They were on the 16th floor when Susie managed to crawl into a closet and fall through a pipe more than 100 feet. The opening was made by construction crews working on the condo. The dog ended up on the 2nd floor of the building.

"I thought she died, but I was calling her from the wall and she was barking, so I knew she was alive," said Caralis.

It took 3 hours for firefighters to rescue the dog.

Susie is being treated at the Oakland Park Animal Hospital. Dr. Ratnoff  says she will most likely make a full recovery. He referred to her as “a miracle dog.”

"The amazing thing is that her injuries are very minimal," he said. "Some bruising of her liver, some lacerations, but no broken bones,” said Dr. Ratnoff.
