Kansas City Clinic Offering Discounted Heart Exams For Young Athletes

Posted: Updated:

KANSAS CITY, MO- Every year hundreds of high school athletes die playing sports.

Many times it's due to an underlying heart condition.

Now one Missouri hospital is helping athletes and their families get answers. Before any problems occur.

Alex Stevens will be a sophomore at Park Hill South this fall.

His sport of choice, track and cross country.

He was checked out in the St. Luke's Athletic Heart Clinic for a couple of reasons.

He's an athlete, and his mom is a cardiologist.

"As a mom I worry enough about things, I've got plenty of things to worry about with my kiddos if I can offer, be offered a screening exam that could save their life, why wouldn't I want to do that," said Dr. Tracy Stevens.

As a doctor, she wants parents to know it's quick, painless and the results are instant.

The doctor leading the way is Anthony Magalski.

The exam is easy. It starts with questions about symptoms, fainting or shortness of breath, and family history.

Then a blood pressure check, and a careful examination for heart murmurs.

But what makes this clinic unique is that the exam doesn't stop there.

"So after the EKG we also do an echocardiogram or ultrasound of the heart where we look at the thickness of the heart, if the heart is enlarged, pumping normally, if the arteries come off the heart in the right place," explains Dr. Magalski.

Dr. Magalski is passionate about this clinic and believes every athlete should be tested.

"It does give them peace of mind, occasionally we find something that is very dangerous, in those situations a lot of times we can treat them and have an operation or and return to play," he said.

Typically the testing they do at this clinic could run thousands of dollars and often isn't covered by insurance.

But thanks to some fundraising efforts and donation the cost is $150.
