Community Rallies Together To Support Children Who Lost Their Mom To Cancer

Posted: Updated:
DELRAN, N.J. -

A New Jersey community came together on Sunday to raise money for two children who lost their mother to cancer.

Fox 29's Chris O'Connell reports.

It was a bitter sweet day, the event was planned a couple months ago to help single mother Jennifer Folk, 39, with her expenses.

The brave mother was in remission after a breast cancer diagnosis 5 years ago. However, about a month ago she was told by doctors that the cancer came back very aggressively. She passed away the day before the benefit.

"I don't how or why this happened, there is no explanation,” said friend Sandy France. “It came on very suddenly three weeks ago she was fine and yesterday she passed away. It's not fair"

Hundreds still filled the Delran VFW hall to help raise money for medical costs. Now, the money raised Sunday through ticket sales and the silent auction will go to Folk's two daughters, Gabby and Jenica. The 8 and 15-year-old were by their mother's side when passed away.

"These women and men that are here today they loved Jen. It doesn't matter if they've never met her children before. They are going to help take care of them whatever they need,” said friend Debbie Carinale.

Friends and family tried to remain in good spirits.

"The reason it's raining today is because that's her. She's pulling a prank on everyone together,” said friend Amanda Hubler.

Many friends including members from the band Rockin’ Road Grill have now shifted their focus from their friend to her daughters.

"This whole community of people are there to help them. Period. Whatever they need. Shoes, clothes. There are a lot of loving friends that are here just for that,” said band member Ed Berner.

Donations are being accepted at any Wells Fargo branch or at the VFW Delran located at 1125 Fairview Street Delran, NJ 08075-3941.
