Teen Raises Money To Help Animals In Need

Posted: Updated:

Queens, NY-There’s a boy in Queens, New York, who is helping animals in need.

He even asked his parents to spend less money on his Bar Mitzvah, so he could donate it to local rescue groups.

13-year-old Marshall Nisselbaum handed over hundreds of dollars to people he's never even met before on Wednesday. All in the name of helping animals.

"I’ve always wanted to help animals and underprivileged animals," he said.

He had the idea to help local shelters earlier this year, and turned to the Trylon Vet Care Center in Forest Hills.

Practice Manager Karla Wallach helped set up a Facebook page to spread the word.

The boy did his part soliciting donations the old fashion way as well.

"I asked around at school, put up flyers in synagogue," he said.

In all, he collected more than $2,000 and sponsors like Purina and Hills kicked in food and supplies

Viktoria Sonorjai's rescue Posh Pets is one of five benefiting from the boy’s efforts. Karen Sturm's Fur Babies Rescue is another.

"We thought it was absolutely amazing it couldn’t come at a better time," said Sturm. "We’ve had a number of sick dogs and our food bank has been depleted out."

"Feels good, feels like I’m accomplishing something,” said Nisselbaum.

He plans to continue raising money for the cause.
