Clergy Reacts To Sting Involving Local Politicians Going To Grand Jury

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The region's black clergy says the Philadelphia’s D.A. should have taken "a pass" on allegations city elected officials took cash from an informant.

Fox 29's Jeff Cole has details of the clergy's reasoning.

This is the "burning issue" of 4 legislators and a former traffic court judge allegedly accepting cash, and in one instance a bracelet, from an informant sent-in by state investigators.

Attorney General Kathleen Kane killed the investigation, but  the Philly D.A. revived it last week by taking it to a grand jury.

On Thursday morning, members of the "Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity" argued Williams should have "killed" the probe just like Attorney General Kane.

The 4 city legislators and the former traffic court judge, alleged to have taken the gifts, have been taped doing it.

The black clergy says investigators should "not" have used an "informant" with a troubled past to "entrap" the elected officials.

We asked the clergy if they think the elected officials could have refused the cash.

“The fact of the matter is that these people are innocent until proven guilty, alright? If I'm accused of a crime I'm innocent until I am prove guilty. Every one of these individuals they have to go through the due process. I don't know if they took money from Mr. Ali. I can't tell you that," said Reverend Terrence Griffith, president of the black clergy.

In a statement, District Attorney Seth Williams asked concerned members of the public to wait until the grand jury releases its findings.

The 4 legislators and the judge have said either they did nothing wrong or they can't recall taking gifts.
