Tractor Trailer Driver Fell Asleep Before Friday Morning I-95 Crash

Posted: Updated:

State police say it was just after 4 this morning when Phillip Bates fell asleep behind the wheel of this UPS semi and rolled the truck on its side.

Investigators say Bates drove off into the shoulder and struck the guard rail of the 295 merge lane.

An 80 year old man traveling behind him was unable to stop and slammed into the under carriage of the tractor trailer.

Both men were wearing their seat belts and will be okay, although Bates was trapped inside the UPS truck for an hour and had to be rescued.

As we approach peak summer driving season, those out on the highway say they're concerned.

Bates was issued a citation for inattentive driving.

It's not known how many hours he had gone without sleeping.
