Parents Accused Of Imprisoning Son In Home's Basement

Posted: Updated:
Atlanta, GA - A former Georgia Tech football player and his wife are facing cruelty to children and false imprisonment charges.

This was due to allegedly locking their eldest son, age 13, in the basement for the past two years.

Charged are his parents, 33-year-old Recardo Wimbush and 37-year-old Therian Wimbush.

"The door was locked from the outside," Cpl. Jake Smith of Gwinnett County Police said.

Police say the Wimbush couple had 10 children and treated them all of them the same, except their oldest.

"Inside the room was a bed, a box spring and a jug used for the toilet, and nothing else" Smith said.

Police say on June 15 the received an anonymous tip, and they paid a visit the next day.

In the parents' arrest warrant, investigators say the teen was let out two to three times a day to eat and use the bathroom. The teen was not allowed to socialize with his other siblings for a full year.

In the warrant, the teen told officers that he believed he was locked away in the basement for stealing the family DVD player. The warrant says the parents believed the 13-year-old had molested siblings.

However, police say there is no evidence of that happening.
