Flames lit up the night sky in North Philadelphia as a three story house burned along the 1500 block of north 6th street.

Firefighters say five people made it out of the family home, but two perished.

Eugine Hayward says his niece, 69-year-old Gwendolyn Cofield died, along with her 5-year-old great grandson TJ.

"She was the mother of that household. She's the mother really the neighborhood. She would do anything for you, anytime. All you had to do was call for it and she was there for it," said Hayward, "she was like the mom, the sister, the doctor, the lawyer, she did everything and didn't mind doing it."

Firefighters say the blaze started just after midnight, it was under control more than 30 minutes later.

The cause is under investigation, fire officials say

Firefighters also say that they family had fire alarms that had gone off, but they did not have an escape plan.

Grief-stricken family members are beginning the process of making funeral arrangements, all the while stunned by the loss of a home which has been the hub of a large family for 55 years.

It is not clear what started the fire. The Red Cross is helping about a dozen people including residents of a neighboring home that was damaged as well.
