9 Injured In Crossfire Of Bourbon Street Shootout

Posted: Updated:

NEW ORLEANS, LA- A shoot-out erupts on Bourbon Street, leaving nine people injured.

A web camera shows it all, as a group gathered at the corner of Orleans and Bourbon Street.

A man in a dark shirt lifts his arm, and suddenly the crowd scatters.

You see the shooter fire off a few more rounds before running down Bourbon.

Jacqueline Richardson was sleeping in her apartment when it happened.

"I heard bam bam bam bam bam. I was sleeping. It woke me up. Then I heard this lady under my balcony screaming in pain.. I got up, all I know she and a few others got shot. It just looked like chaos," recalled witness Jacqueline Richardson

In that chaos caught on camera, a man goes down.

A few feet away, a police offer and others passing by rush to a woman laying face up in the middle of the road.

"She was screaming my sister, my sister. My sister got shot too - where is she?" said Richardson.

New Orleans Police say the early morning shooting started with an argument between two men. Nine people were hit.

All of the victims were caught in the crossfire of the shootout, which left visible damage behind-including this hole in the door of the bourbon heat nightclub.

In the press conference at the scene, NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas called the two shooters "cowards"

"This is a heinous crime. This is two young men, both armed with firearms, who chose to settle a dispute between themselves without a moment's care for anyone else," said Serpas, "within moments, within seconds, police officers were on the scene doing what we want them to do."

A lack of police presence has been a common complaint among residents and business owners in the area, but police say 25 officers were patrolling the 8th district which includes the quarter.

Officers are still working to identify those two men and why they were fighting in the first place.

"I know it was about something stupid, I can tell you that," said Chief Serpas.

Serpas is asking witnesses, business owners, and visitors, to come forward with information.
