Woman Says She Was Injured After Laptop Battery Exploded

Posted: Updated:
LANGHORNE, Pa. -

A local woman says her laptop battery pack exploded while she was using it on Sunday night.

Fox 29's Dave Kinchen has her story.

It was a night Loretta Luff of Langhorne Manor will never forget.

"It was the 4th inning of the Phils. I was sitting at the computer desk here,” she said.

She was checking some e-mails when something went terribly wrong.

"There was like a little noise, and I turned to look at my husband (and) the TV and I turned back and the thing just blew up!" said Luff.

She says the Dell Inspiron 1501's battery pack blew up in her face and set her on fire.

"My shirt caught fire so I quick got my shirt off and that's when I think I singed my hair and probably my face and all," she said.

That shirt is now covered with burns.

She used it to put out mini fires all over the den after flaming parts flew everywhere and just inches from her disabled husband.

"They kept popping up so I just kept beating them and I grabbed my dog's water dish,” she said.

That put more of the fire out.

She was then rushed to the hospital with 1st and 2nd degree burns.

"It's like a sunburn, ok? Got it on the arm, on the chest and the neck. You can see I got a big blister under here,” said Ruff.

Ruff says she also hurt her foot after stepping on one of the batteries.

She’s on meds right now and says she's just glad to be alive.

"I'm lucky. It could be worse,” she said.

The Langhorne-Middletown fire chief is investigating the incident.

He says it is not clear what caused the explosion.

Fox 29 reached out to Dell's corporate offices as well and have not heard back.
