NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The streets of Hollis, Queens are where Grammy nominated hip-hop artist Ja Rule got his start. As he skyrocketed to fame at a young age, the entertainer would learn he was surrounded by all the wrong people.

After serving two years in prison for attempted possession of a weapon and tax evasion, Ja Rule has written a book about his life, 'UnRuly: The Highs and Lows of Becoming a Man.'

“I wanted to be as authentic as possible," said Ja Rule. "There are a lot of young men who grew up the same way I did; who may not have the same outlet that I had. Hopefully, when they read my book they can get a sense of hope. The book has a lot of that."

While in federal prison, the artist who had sold more than 30 million records, who had known fame at itshighestt levels at only 22 years old, changed his perception on life.

"Before I went into prison I was sliding down a slippery slope. When I went to prison I got a chance to be by myself. I discovered a lot about myself and the people I was hurting. When I was in prison all I wanted was to have a good tooth brush or good toilet paper. I wanted to be at my kids' games," said JaRule.

The husband and father of three is more focused than ever on his family.  His favorite songs are those he's written with family in mind: 'Daddy's Little Baby,' which he wrote for his daughter; and 'Put It On Me,' written for his wife.

Ja Rule returns to Queens on Tuesday, July 1 to sign copies of 'UnRuly.' He'll be at the Barnes & Noble at Utopia Center in Fresh Meadows at 7 p.m.
