NJ school official retires after airport arrest

Posted: Updated:

LAWRENCE, N.J. (AP) - A woman accused of trying to carry a handgun and knife through security at Philadelphia International Airport is stepping down from her job in a New Jersey school system.

Kathryn Spiropoulos has retired as transportation supervisor for the Lawrence public schools.

The Times of Trenton (http://bit.ly/1jIXPbT ) reports the 53-year-old was reappointed to the post in April, but the reappointment was rescinded in June.

Airport screeners say the Ewing Township resident was carrying a loaded Glock handgun and a credit-card shaped object that folded into a knife in her purse as she went through security on May 21.

Spiropoulos is scheduled to appear in Philadelphia Municipal Court on July 10 on weapons possession charges because she did not have a permit to carry a gun.
