NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The NYPD has charged the mother of a baby abandoned on a subway platform in Manhattan. Frankea Dabbs, 20, is accused of leaving the 10-month-old child in a stroller at the Columbus Circle station on Monday morning.

Dabbs faces charges including abandonment of a child and acting in a manner injurious to a child under the age of 17.

Sources tell Fox 5 News the mother told police she could no longer care for the child. Dabbs was picked up at Amsterdam and W. 71st St. early Tuesday and was questioned through the overnight hours.

Dabbs, who is homeless, is from North Carolina and recently arrived to New York after the baby's father died, said police.

She was riding the No. 1 train northbound with the baby in a stroller. When the train stopped at Columbus Circle and the doors opened, the woman pushed the stroller onto the platform and then rode away on the train at about 11:50 a.m, a witnesses said.

A commuter noticed the unattended stroller and stayed with the baby hoping the mother would come back. After about 20 minutes, that woman alerted cops, who brought that baby to the NYPD's Transit District, located in the station.

Medics responded and brought the girl to Roosevelt Hospital in good condition, officials said. She was wearing a white and red blouse and black leggings. The stroller is red with white dots. The child was in the care and custody of the Administration for Children Services.

The mother told police she thought she was leaving the baby in "in a safe place."

Police released photos of the baby and the stroller. Police described the woman as black, between 20 and 30 years old, with medium-length black hair, and wearing a short-sleeved yellow blouse.
