AMC to roll out more theaters with reclining seats

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The squeak of mechanized leather and a sloping view of the world greet customers at the AMC movie theater on Broadway at 84th Street.

AMC plans to fill 1,800 of its 5,000-ish theaters with recliners in hopes a new perspective leads all its customers to see movies more frequently.

AMC director of media relations Ryan Noonan acknowledged we now live in a world where movie theaters face more competition than ever before.

The rise in seat quality also leads to a decline -- by as much as 70 percent -- in the number of seats in a theater, all in hopes of raising attendance. And according to AMC, the gimmick has worked. At its reclining locations across the country attendance has risen eighty percent, the theater chain says.

For now you can grab a soda and a ticket to a reclining seat for the same price as a regular seat at the movies. But in the next year, AMC plans to raise prices at reclining theaters by as much as $2 per ticket.
