Mural Honors Fallen Firefighters Killed In Kensington Fire

PHILADELPHIA -

There's a new mural in the city that honors the lives and legacies of two fallen heroes, Firefighter Daniel Sweeney and Lieutenant Robert Neary.

Those brave men made the supreme sacrifice while battling a 5-alarm warehouse fire in Kensington on the morning of Monday, April 9, 2012.

On Thursday, the dedication ceremony was held, and included presentations by The Police & Fire Pipes and Drum Corps and the Color Guard.

This mural was created by David McShane and Jesse Gardner, and painted by Kien Nguyen to honor their commitment and bravery.

The design team also worked with the families on the mural.

"Everything in our life is bittersweet,” said Sweeney's mother, Marian. “Sometimes, it keep us up at night, 2 years, 3 months, yet it feels like it was yesterday. It's a constant heartache."

“It's on our mind all the time, the loss of our son,” said Sweeney's father, David.

You can see the mural from EL, the larger than life portraits of what makes our city so great.

With her husband gone, Diane Neary walked arm-in-arm on Thursday with an injured firefighter to the scene that made her a widow.

“I believe our father wanted him home at this time. I think he's sitting at table in heaven, instructing young fireman, assisting down here," she said.  "Fighting fires, that's what I think."
