Unions, Christie clashing again over pensions

Posted: Updated:

LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Gov. Chris Christie has not yet said how he plans to cut the costs of pensions for public workers.

But their unions are already pushing back against the governor.

Unions for police and firefighters have been criticizing Christie's selection of a venue for his town-hall meeting scheduled for Tuesday. It's being held near a playground built by volunteering police, firefighters and teachers in honor of a teacher killed in the 2012 Newtown, Connecticut school shooting.

Their complaint is that Christie is targeting public workers' benefits with a tour of events he's calling "No Pain, No Gain."

Union officials say they will fight any proposal Christie makes to reduce pension benefits and will also file a lawsuit in a bid to force him to make full pension contributions.
