VIDEO: Police Chase Ends With Gunfight

Posted: Updated:

BARRON CO., WI- After criss-crossing county lines during a 20-mile, high-speed chase in Wisconsin, police dash cam video caught some intense moments that seem more like a movie than an actual arrest.

“You don't start your morning out thinking there is going to be a shooting in your county,” Dunn County Sheriff Dennis Smith told Fox 9 News.

Back on June 3, 2014, investigators were working to arrest Jared Brendel.

"In the 2 weeks prior to this case, they had been looking for this guy for a felony probation pick up," Smith explained. "They kept on having cars get stolen and had information that he was the one that stole them … there was a couple cases where guns had gone missing."

Investigators say dashboard camera video shows the 20 mile chase, with speeds ranging from 30mph to 80 mph in Dunn and Barron counties. After driving around two sets of stop sticks, a Barron County deputy performed a PIT maneuver and was quickly met with gunshots from Brendel, police say. Three deputies shot back roughly 10 times, hitting Brendel’s car door repeatedly.

“How the suspect didn't get killed is just a guess," Smith acknowledged. "Very, very surprising he didn't get killed.”

With Brendel under arrest and facing attempted murder charges, and no one hurt in the shootout, Sheriff Smith calls the ordeal “textbook quality.” He plans to use the video for training, but the sheriff in the next county hopes his officers won't need to.

“It's like the wild, wild west,” Barron Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said of what his deputies went through. “It's not something we see up in northern Wisconsin, and I hope to never have to see it again.”
