Manhattan Nursery School Uses Sanitizing Machine To Keep Air Clean

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - All of us feel the same way about "cooties": Eww. At the Goddard School on the Upper West Side, a high-tech machine is keeping "cooties" out of the classroom.

"This is the latest and then most effective sanitization method available today," says Bill Swan, the owner of the Goddard School. He purchased the ZONO Sanitech for his school about six months ago. The machine is the size of a double refrigerator and uses oxygen to kill viruses and bacteria.

"We generate ozone from air in the ZONO," says Walter Mann, founder of ZONO Sanitech. "We then sanitize using that air and the humidity in the ZONO, and then we run the air through the converter to convert it back to the normal oxygen."

The sanitizing process can kill MRSA, staph infection, E. coli, and strep.

Lauren Katz, the lead pre-K teacher, says the ZONO cleans the cracks and crevices of all the classroom toys.

"I got pencils, crayons, books, it's great you can put everything," she says. "You can't put the books in soap and water."

"We do it nine times a day every classroom treated every day," Swan says. "During the flu season we were able to reduce absenteeism by about 20 percent because of this."

ZONO Sanitech was created about four years ago. Mann came up with the idea after his son's lacrosse teammate got a staph infection through his gear.

Now, about 80 day care centers, athletic facilities, and prisons across the country are using the technology.

"They ZONO bedding, shackles, or other items as infections present in the prison," Mann says.

The units range from $10,000 to $16,000.

The Goddard School is the first place in New York to have a ZONO.
