Investigators Look Into Deadly Crash Involving NASCAR's Stewart

Posted: Updated:

Three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart says there are no words to describe his sadness over the crash that killed a young sprint car driver.

The crash occurred Saturday in upstate New York. Amateur video obtained by FOX News shows the incident.

Kevin Ward Jr.'s car spins out. He then gets out of his car and starts walking on the track.

It appears Ward tries to confront Stewart, who is heading towards him.

That's when Stewart's car collides with Ward, throwing him 50 feet along the track.

Ward was pronounced dead on the way to Canadaigua Hospital.

An investigation is now under way, but police tell us it is not being considered criminal at this time.

"As in any death investigation, we are going to sit down with the district attorney, his staff and review when the investigation is complete," Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said. "People that witnessed it were horrified. They were extremely shocked by what they saw."

Officials say Stewart has "fully cooperated" with the investigation and appeared "very upset" over what happened. A final report has yet to be issued.

Stewart did pull out of a NASCAR Sprint Cup event scheduled for Sunday.

This is not the first time Stewart has injured someone during a race. Stewart was involved in a July 2013 crash, seriously injuring a 19-year-old.
