Veteran Hospice Patient Receives Purple Heart

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. - After 60 years, a  veteran from Northeast Philadelphia received his Purple Heart in a ceremony on Monday.

William "Ron" Arpino,82, declined his Purple Heart the first time around for his service in the Korean Conflict in 1953.

Sergeant Arpino was wounded in battle in Paugol and earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his service; however, he declined the honor because he didn't want his mother to know he was injured.

Arpino was recently given the news he only has weeks to live, so a family friend advocated for the veteran to receive the honor he deserves.

Arpino finally accepted the Purple Heart he earned many years ago in front of family, friends and fellow veterans at Holy Redeemer Hospital in Montgomery County where he is currently in hospice care.
