Paraplegic Man Pushes Himself Out Second Story Window During Chester Fire

Posted: Updated:
CHESTER, Pa. - A fire broke out just after 7 o'clock Tuesday night at the Buckman Apartments located at 1000 Meadow Lane in Chester, Pa.

Officials say a 54-year-old paralyzed man was trapped in his home, but was able to save his own life by pushing himself out of a second story window.

According to investigators, the stove burners were off and the victim was cooking at the time, so they're not sure how the fire started. They say the man was on his couch in the living room, but was able to get into his wheelchair, then get to the window and save his own life.

"He's basically paralyzed from the waist down, he was able to maneuver his wheelchair to the window, and pull himself up and actually jump from the window,” said Chester Fire Department Battalion Chief Charles Hopkins.

The victim is also a Marine veteran. He's at Chester-Crozier Medical Center with injuries to his torso from the jump. The apartment building opened five years ago and houses veterans who are down on their luck.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
