2 Teens Injured, Multiple Cars Struck In South Philadelphia Shooting

Posted: Updated:

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA-Two teenagers are recovering after being shot just one block off of busy South Street.

The shooting happened just before midnight at 10th and Bainbridge near a rec center.

This latest round of violence worries people living in the neighborhood as the gunman is still on the run.

FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reports from police headquarters.

At 10th and Bainbridge in the heart of South Philadelphia, people walk their dogs, shoot some hoops at the local rec center, and take their children for a leisurely stroll on a beautiful summer day. The sight of shell casings on the ground is foreign to the neighborhood.

“It's unheard of around here. This is a very special neighborhood," said resident Rochelle Burns.

Police say one or more gunmen fired 11 shots, two 18-year olds were struck multiple times in the legs, right outside the Palumbo rec center basketball courts, several cars were also hit by gunfire.

“All the children come here to play, baseball, soccer goes on here . It’s just a neighborhood place. This is really a shock to me,” said Burns

Sam and Janice Mosca live a few blocks away. Gunfire this close to home has them very concerned.

“I'm sad that people need to resort to violence,” said Sam.

Christine Giordano and her daughter strolled by the shooting scene Thursday morning. The news about gunfire worried her.

“Very frightening, I'm here with my daughter, yeah absolutely would make me think twice,” she said.

Police patrols and bike cops rolled through the area all day as detectives search for the gunmen, many residents hope for a quick arrest.

Police are taking a look at surveillance footage from a nearby businesses. Both teens are in stable condition with gunshot wounds to the legs.
