HIGHLAND PARK, MI- She was hailed a hero.

Now, in a shocking turn of events, in the search for the mother who abandoned her newborn son, just hours after birth.

The 16-year-old was praised Saturday morning when she claimed she found a baby in some plants next to a dumpster in Michigan.

Her identity is now being protected because police say she is the baby's mother.

In an interview Saturday, the teenager was asked why she thinks somebody would abandon their baby.

"I don't know, I guess they wasn't ready," she said, "I took the shortcut to the store and I heard a baby cry and I was scared at first and then I went over there and walked towards it and got it and brought it back home."

Police say the little boy was not even 10-hours old when authorities took him into custody.

He's in good condition at a children's hospital in Detroit.

Police say under Michigan's Safe Haven Law the mother could have left her baby at any hospital, police station, or fire station without consequence.
