'Quirky' Company Leading The Way To The Shelves

Posted: Updated:

Today's "quirky" idea, could be tomorrow's big invention.

A smart phone that changes the world, or maybe a longer- lasting chewing gum.

Now there's a place to help you get your great idea off the ground, thanks to internet startup Quirky.

Inventor Garthen Leslie's story started out like many others.

"I was at the point where I had the idea, it was flushed out, but I didn't know what to do with the next step," he said

The former department of energy worker came up with a smart windows air conditioner called Aros, which you can turn on remotely with an app.

Leslie knew his idea was good, but he needed help, that's where Quirky came in.

The New York City based invention company uses an online community of nearly 1-million members to give feedback on pitched inventions, and then, takes a vote on which products to make.

Quirky's founder and CEO Ben Kaufman started the company, in 2009, with a plan to make invention accessible to everyone

"It feels great to see people's ideas come to life, have them be on retail shelves, and know that that idea wouldn't be out in the world had it not been for this global community, had it not been for the infrastructure and the services we provide as a company," he said.

Once the quirky team approves an idea, the company then designs, patents, manufactures, and markets the invention, taking ownership of the idea, then giving the inventor perpetual royalties of the product.

The Quirky members, who helped along the way, get a cut too

Quirky receives up to 5,000 new ideas a week and makes 3 to 4 new products every week. Right now there are over 100 quirky products on sale in major retailers like target and best buy.

Last year Quirky's inventors and its online community shared $3.8 million dollars.

And Leslie says he expects to do quite well by year's end.
